The Importance of a personal Sacred Space | The School of Shamanic Initiation

A sacred space is any place that an individual considers to be of importance and value. It can be anything from a physical location, to something that may only exist in your thoughts or dreams. It can be so simple as your home or room or something larger like a forest or land that you have a connection with. As long as you hold it in high respect and value, it can be considered to be your sacred space. For example, churches, temples or sanctuaries are sacred sites that holds an energy from a collective. People often make pilgrimages and visits to these places, and consider these experiences to be very special and important in some way. A lot of people find that they become more thoughtful and creative in these places and even notice a marked improvement in their wellbeing when they visit. They might try to make sure only certain people enter, make offerings or prayers there, or spend time there regularly in order to deepen that connection.

The important thing to create your own, is that it's yours, you have claimed it, created it and recognize it. You can shape it however you see fit. So, What is the value of having a special place to practice and learn the language of the ritual?

When in nature, be in touch with it.

When in the city, be in touch with the living energy of the place.

This is due to the fact that human beings have revered sites for thousands, if not millions of years, we can do exactly the same as our ancestors. Do not limit yourself. The importance of having a sacred space is the ability to create it wherever you are. You begin to connect your unconscious mind with your conscious mind. Ask yourself:

What do you think your sacred space looks like or what does it symbolize?

Human beings have always been myth-makers. From the beginning, humans created stories about their world, and spirituality was born from this need to explain what goes on around them. Keeping with this mythological tradition, what a great opportunity to create a place where you can take these myths and bring them into reality, to life whether it be by constructing for example altars or having a certain room in your house dedicated only to meditation or an area in your backyard where you have specific ítems where ritual is performed.

Practice magic anytime, anyplace

When performing such activities, pay attention. Having a sacred area allows you to focus inward rather than everything being all over the place. This also helps by reducing the pressure since you're concentrating all of your physical, mental  and energetic resources into one location.
